Flathead catfish
Strong flathead presence — live or fresh bait near wood, rock, and channel structure after dark.
Season
- Spring: move shallow around cover as water warms.
- Summer nights: prime — big flats hunt after dark.
- Fall: continue near structure until water cools hard.
- Winter: deep holes; slower bite.
Time of day
Night is classic flathead time. Quiet banks and lighted docks (public only) can draw baitfish — stay legal and respectful.
Where on Hoover
- Timber, rock, and channel bends on the ODNR contour map (public water only).
- Bank stretches near Walnut Road and quieter upper arms.
- Boat: edges of the old channel and cover — 10 hp / idle rules.

Gear

Bait & presentation
- Live bait where legal, or very fresh cut bait.
- Present near cover; don’t snag private property or swim areas.
- Patience — flatheads often hit later in the night.
